In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In horror movies there are typical movie conventions that horror movies follow as they are part of what makes a film successful, these first started in the horror movie Halloween in 1978. In horror movies the main structure of them are media language, genre, narrative, representation and audience. Though movie trailers have key conventions such as the trailers must pick out certain parts that will attract the target audience, the music must also be emotive and keeping with the genre of the movie. This way it will emphasise the music building up to making the auidence jump or a part in the movie that the killer gets a victim, there is also the voice over which will tease us into wanting to see the movie this is because the film will be asking questions that will want to know the answers. Though this may involve using repetition of grammatical, alliteration and other language devices this way it adds more of a emotion to the viewers, and will also get them thinking more. We also used typical trailer conventions in our horror trailer, this was because our horror trailer indicated it was a horror trailer by the location of it and also the blood and mysterious events that happened. It also was done by the type of music that was used to build up tension, except for the party scene that is common in our target audiences horror trailers. The name of the horror trailer is "Deranged" and this stands for disturbing or to upset a normal function, which this is situable for a horror trailer, as nothing is going right for the victims that he is after. Another convention is having in a horror trailer factors that will see the movie, like production values if a famous star has been used or director we used this in our horror trailer at the beginging of the footage. Another thing that traliers should pick up is the target audience and also the music should be emotive, these are both used in our horror trailer as the target audience is dependant upon the survey that we done by finding out what types of things they would like in the trailer, and also the music is emotive by keeping you on the edge of your seats from the beginging of the trailer with the flashing of the lights of the scenes on the house fits in with the music used in the background. And another common convention is the voice over that is used to guide the audience while watching the horror trailer, it also introduces the central characters and also into teasing us into the watching the movie. This is used in our horror trailer as we have the heavy breathing in the background making it more emotive and teasing, and also with the screams and in the voice over we have a setence where it says we shouldn't go in there to add a affect.
When we started thinking about how we wanted to have our horror trailer, we could then look at other trailers and see how we could develop our work more.

These two images here show the typical conventions of a horror movie, this is because they are set in rural locations which means it adds a sense of insecruity to the movie. The image on the left is of the house we used in our horror teaser trailer Deranged, were as the image on the right i have chosen from a horror movie called The last house on the left. In a horror movie the location is important to the viewers because it makes the film a lot more real and alone when they are isolated. For the next images we looked at a typical teenage party where everyones

having a good time and alot of people are getting drunk, but then after the party has happened is when things start to go wrong. The image on the left is from our horror trailer that we produced, it was filmed in a back garden and i think we managed to produce a good scene as we didn't have very many people. Where as the image on the right i have selected from a horror movie called sorority row which follows similar conventions, as everyone starts to relax and enjoy themselves things take a turn for the worst.

These scenes both start to show the movie going wrong, where the killer begins to imerge and start making the characters plans more aware. Both of these scenes have been set in the hot tub, the image on the right is from our horror trailer where we had one of the characters laying face down in the hot tub. As the movie is designed to be a psychological horror, as from our audience research this showed this was what our target audience wanted. The image on the left is from sorority row where the killer starts the attack the characters more, this is also set outside in the garden in the hot tub that has been featured in because of the party.

Another convention to a horror genre is also the location throughout the movie, this is because it makes it feel isolated and that the killer has a edge into winning. Both of the characters are hidden by the surronding woods and carry a weapon suggesting they are the evil character searching for their next victims, both of the charcaters also have been dressed in dark colours or camoflourage. The one featured in the left is from our movie showing the evil character pacing through the woodland, and this is the same for the character on the right as it shows they are ready for a fight also both of the characters have quiet a manly frame which makes the charcater feel more scary.
These shots also both contain woodland for their location to represent the isolation, the images featured on the left is from our horror trailer it shows a canted angle of the woodland making it looks slightly more scary and deranged to fit the film, where as the images on the right is from eden lake where a couple are stranded in the woods running for their lives. These next two frames are both used in horror movies where both of the charcacters are covered in blood
the image on the left is from our teaser trailer that we covered the character in blood, this could maybe represent victims on injuries that have been caused. The blood added to a characters face shows straight away that the movie contains voilence and actions and would normally be of a horror genre, were as the image on the right shows the victim that is trying to escape though for her to escape she needed to kill some of the people that was after her. It just shows that when people are in desperate situations some of them can be capable of anything, having the blood and dirt though to the characters makes them look more real and alive rather than having nothing some of the injuries featured on horror movies can make the viewers jump more.
A typical convention in a horror trailer is to show a phone shot where they are in trouble and trying to get service to be able to call for help, the images both show this happening. By having this kind of frame in a clip it makes you wonder how they are going to get help, or will they be standard as it adds more suspense to the movie and so keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The image on the left is a frame from our horror trailer, where it shows a image of the phone showing it has no signal in the middle of a forest. Where as the image on the right is form the movie eight legged freaks, the frame shows a guy on the roof of a building trying to get some sort of signal so that he can call for help. This also adds to the sense of isolation, this is because theres no way to gain contact with the outside world and so it makes you wonder what is going to happen next.

This is a classic clip in a horror movie with the helpless victims running through the forest, this is a good frame because it keeps the udience on the edge of their seat. And when they run into woods they are trying to lose the killer and theres the dramatic clip whether we wonder if one will not make it out alive in this clip. In our clip on the left we had the last survivor running through the trees, this looks very effective as it adds to chase of who will win and is like survivor of the fittest. The image on the right is from the wrong turn and it shows the two main characters making a run from the killer, normally in the chase or run they feature the main characters that are either the hero though some time they do feature the victims that normally get killed in the run by making a wrong move or the killer having some sort of advantage.

These clips both show the last surviving women in the movie, nornmally this women is a virgin and isn't dressed very girly normally dressed very plain and doesn't have any makeup on. In these frames it shows the last fight that they take on the evil character and try to defeat them, this battle normally results in the good character winning and as we can see both these characters are wearing light coloured clothes compared to the other characters. The image on the left from our horror trailer shows a stand off beaten the good and evil character, and it leaves the audience wondering what is going to happen next. In the image on the right side it shows a stand off as well where the characters starts to fight more, this image is from the trailer of daybreakers.

  1. This is a really good and thorough answer. Well done Sabrina. You could improve it by giving examples from your own trailer of the trailer conventions that you discuss in the first paragraph. You have explored the horror conventions very well.
